[if critique wanted] The pigeon silhouette is pretty distraction NOT an blackbird. (Pigeons: not so sinister.) If you've got a few minutes, I'd recommend editing the birds to be actual blackbirds-- the painting would look more unique and deliberate, instead of like a random scattering of bird-like shapes. Also, just like people, birds have really distinct body language in their poses-- right now you've got a really random flock of birds not paying much attention to the subject at the center of the painting. Try doing some fast sketches to test bird poses, either threatening or about to fly or tense or *something*. Right now it's a bit like they're random leaf silhouettes, just some ideas used in composition, not actual creatures, and not quick painterly-vague enough to be pure background elements. [/if critique wanted]
Try watching Hitchcock's "The Birds" with this in mind: what should be a horror film about scary alien birds turns really campy when you notice that a) half the attacking birds are actually dead, and mounted on sticks and b) the rest of the birds in the film are falling asleep / preening their butts when they're supposed to be looming threateningly.
